Hi ARL Family!

If you’re thinking about adding a new memeber to your pack please check out this article, How To Figure Out A Dog’s Energy Level by Cesar Milan. Cesar provides insight as to why WANTING a dog versus choosing the right energy for your home is crucial for success.

With all adoptions we want to make sure that we set up both the owner/family and new dog up for success. Too often do dogs come back to shelters because “we want” a specific breed. We hope you find value in this article as we have.

If you know of anyone thinking about adopting or want to share with your human pack please share this post!

25 Creative Ways to Help Animal Shelters - By Jaymi Heimbuch Updated January 10, 2022

25 Creative Ways to Help Animal Shelters By Jaymi Heimbuch Updated January 10, 2022

Many of us would love to help dogs, cats and other rescued animals living at the local shelter, but let’s face it — it can be hard. There often aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish our own tasks, let alone volunteer for the many tasks a shelter has on the to-do list. Donating money would be easier, but maybe you’re on a budget and don’t have much to spare. That’s OK! There are lots of ways to help local animal shelters without investing a ton of time, money or energy.

The first step is to learn about the local shelters in your area and their needs. Some might be doing fine on donations but need help caring for the animals waiting for a forever home, while others might be struggling to make ends meet and could use a push in the donation sector. Figure out your skill set and where you’re needed most. The next step is to check out this list of creative ways you can help. Then decide on one (or a few) small things you can do to make a huge difference.

New Texas Law: Get to know the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act

New

Today is a new day in Texas - the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act goes into effect January 18, 2022

Visit the THLN ( Texas Humane Legislation Network) webpage for more details.

What is the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act? Checkout an overview below:

Texas dogs and the communities where they reside deserve a common-sense, balanced policy governing the restraint of dogs outdoors. The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, which goes into effect January 18, 2022, achieves that by:

Defining adequate shelter to protect dogs from extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and standing water. Previously, there was no definition for shelter, thus tethered dogs routinely perished from exposure. Requiring access to drinkable water. Before the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, state law did not include this vital requirement. Requiring safe restraints. The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act strikes the use of chains. Other means of restraint, such as cable tie-outs, may be used so long as they are correctly attached to a collar or harness designed to restrain a dog. Arguably the most significant change wrought by the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act is removing the 24-hour warning period that allowed bad actors to flout the law. Officers can take immediate action for tethered dogs in distress from now on.

In additon: -Exceptions to the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act -Restraining Dogs Without Using Chains

PAWS: Pets Advancing Wellness and Success

PAWS:

At ARLEP we’ve had the amazing opportunity to partner with community member programs and PAWS has been a partnership that we cannot thank enough.

At ARLEP we are lucky to have some of our dogs participate and pass with flying colors! During their program over a course of a few weeks our dogs will learn basic obedience commands.

More details about the Program: Inmates receive instruction in Animal Care by performing daily cleaning and sanitizing of the kennels and cages, feeding the animals, and through training interaction. Inmates will also participate in educational programs such as GED, ESL, and Job Readiness. Additionally, inmates receive an introduction to kennel maintenance by making general repairs.

The El Paso Detention System, under the command of Executive Chief Deputy Sylvia Aguilar, consists of two jails that hold pretrial and convicted persons. The System has a staff of over 700 uniformed and non-uniformed personnel. In the last decade, 402,888 individuals were booked into the system. The PAWS in Detention kennel was built by inmates for inmates. Equipment and supplies were purchased through inmate-generated funds and construction was assisted with inmate labor. Dogs being rehabilitated are “last chance” dogs meaning they have been adopted once and returned for various reasons.

How You Can Help Since funding opportunities like these are limited, the PAWS in Detention program is accepting donations. Checks should be made payable to: El Paso County Donation drop off locations are: Jail Annex (12501 Montana Ave. El Paso, TX 79938) Detention Facility (601 E. Overland Ave. El Paso, TX 79901) Sheriff’s Headquarters (3850 Justice Dr. El Paso, TX 79938)

Have questions or suggestions please contact: PAWS@epcounty.com (915) 856-4808

Summer Prep for Pets

Summer

Temperatures are creeping up and that means you’ll need to consider different safety precautions for your pet(s). ARLEP put together this helpful guide to assist you in prepping for a safe and fun summer with your pets.

Reschedule your walks

The temperature of the pavement can be drastically different than the air temperature. Plan walks for early in the morning or after the sun goes down to ensure the pavement doesn’t burn your pet’s paws. You can test the temperature by placing the tops of your hands on the pavement, if you can’t comfortably leave them there, it’s too hot for your pet.

Plan your errands

The temperature inside a vehicle will rapidly reach triple digits, even if the temperature outside the car is not. Leaving your pets unattended in a vehicle is discouraged throughout the year, but particularly in summer. Plan to run your errands solo or take your pet with you when you leave your vehicle.

Hydrate frequently

Your pet should always have access to fresh, clean water. But in the summer, this is even more critical to the welfare of your pet. If you’re away during the day, consider coming home during lunch or hiring a pet minder to check on your pet during the day to ensure they have adequate water.
